What are the main causes of divorce?

Divorce is a very difficult subject to broach. However, the reality of the situation is that thousands of couples in Pennsylvania are getting divorced every year. While this is simply life, it is also worthwhile to think about the reasons why these couples are getting divorced. Nobody goes into a marriage wishing it to end this way, and some careful thought may help others from making the same mistake. According to the Institute for Family Studies, one of the most common reasons for divorce is a lack of commitment.

Of course, this is a rather vague statement to make. Lack of commitment can involve anything from outright infidelity to simply losing “spark.” (It may be obvious, but infidelity is also a very popular reason for a marriage to end.) Domestic violence and substance abuse were also commonly cited reasons for divorce. Interestingly enough, women are more likely than men to opt to end a marriage, particularly where instances of abuse are concerned. However, other studies are quick to point out that this may be more of a cultural issue than anything else, where abused men may be afraid to make a stand over being abused.

Another interesting tidbit is that many divorces occur due to disagreements over whether or not to have children. Many suspect that this is becoming a more common issue given that a couple generations ago having children in marriage was all but assumed. However, as opting for a childless lifestyle is becoming more socially accepted, more divorces are occurring because of it.

There is no way to guarantee that a marriage will not end in divorce. But these are important things to consider if you are trying to avoid it.
