President Trump halts temporary work visas

Immigrant families in Pennsylvania are concerned with a recent executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump that suspends temporary work visas for immigrants through the end of the year. These families are joined in their dissatisfaction by advocacy groups, such as the American Immigration Council, who argue the president is playing games with the lives of immigrant families in order to score points with his political base.

The Trump Administration counters by saying the move frees up more than 500,000 jobs for American workers in need of employment. The decision comes approximately two months following a decision by Trump to execute a freeze on immigration into America for 60 days. Trump says the immigration suspension was necessary to protect American workers from unfair job competition. The new order by Trump extends the original immigration ban and makes the work visa restriction effective until December 30, 2020.

The work visa suspension will directly affect holders of the H1-B visas that are given to high-skilled workers who perform their duties mainly in tech-related industries. The freeze will also affect the work statuses of many seasonal workers in fields like hospitality and construction. Spouses of H1-B visa holders who receive H-4 visas may also have their right to work affected by the executive order signed by the president. The same goes for the holders of L-1 and J-1 visas that are issued to large corporation executives and scholars respectively.

The right to live and work in America is essential to the survival of many immigrant families. When immigration issues affect these rights, it is important that the affected individual do everything necessary to achieve a favorable outcome in a timely manner. An immigration attorney with the experience and commitment necessary to properly navigate the process may be helpful at achieving the desired results.
